It was a lot of fun coming up with the 10 best games to ever hit previous PlayStation platforms — the PS1, PS2, PSP, PSN, and PS3 — especially because of how rich those libraries were. The natural next step is the PlayStation 4, except there’s one glaring problem: the system is only a few months old, and declaring the all-time best games on the system won’t be possible for a few years, at least.
Still, we love Sony’s new hardware and making lists, so we’ll do the next-best thing — we’ll rattle off the five best games that you can pick up on the PS4 right now. Whether or not any of these titles make it into our list of all-time greats years down the line, they prove that the system is off to a strong start.
We’re not ranking these the way we did for other platforms, but these are our favorite PS4 games so far.
The latest in Ubisoft’s flagship franchise, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag managed to silence anyone who thought that the series had entered into an irreversible tailspin following the release of the disappointing Assassin’s Creed III. It did so by expanding on the best part of an otherwise underwhelming game — setting sail on the high seas and wreaking havoc.
By making you the captain of your own pirate ship, Ubisoft found an ingenious way to create one of the best open worlds in gaming history. Bringing down other ships and plundering their booty is a blast, and your shanty-loving crew makes it so that sailing across the vast ocean was never a drag. Assassin’s Creed IV on PlayStation 4 also brings a noticeable graphical upgrade over the PS3 version, which is just icing on the cake.
If you’re looking for a game that you can sink dozens of hours into, you can’t go wrong with Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag.
