There has been a lot of talk this past week about film adaptations of The Last of Us, Assassin’s Creed, Warcraft, and many other big name video game franchises. Whenever a new video game based movie enters development, we are reminded of the huge pile of critical and box office busts that have come before. Yet, there a handful of video game based movies that have proven themselves as classics. Well, maybe not classics, but they are at least good! Okay, there are a few that are at least watchable.
Today, we list off five movies based on video games that are decent enough to watch. Some of them are even pretty good!
Was it cheesy? Yes. Was the acting questionable at times? Yes. Was it a lot of kung-fu fun featuring most of our favorite characters from the hit fighting game franchise? Oh yes. Mortal Kombat may have been panned by critics (although it did garner a thumbs up from Gene Siskel of Siskel & Ebert fame), but it is still a very enjoyable flick for fans of the game series. The story is far from award winning, but it tells the whole “tournament that Earthrealm must win lest Outworld lay waste to us all” story of the games as well as could be expected.
Mortal Kombat looks dated now. The CGI employed for characters like Reptile looks down right bad by today’s standards, but that adds to the movie’s charm in a way. The horrible lava flowing from Scorpion as he gets cut open, the icy aura emanating from Sub-Zero; it’s all just ham-fisted mystical shtick. If you’ve never seen it and you can get past the bad acting and CGI, Mortal Kombat is a video game movie worth watching.
