Injustice: Gods Among Us
It was a fairly light month for new game releases, but Injustice: Gods Among Us was the cream of the crop. It proved that a DC Comics fighting game could work if given enough creative freedom, with a dark story that was the most cinematic and engrossing that we’ve ever seen in a fighting game.
Most important is that NetherRealm Studios made sure that it wasn’t just Mortal Kombat with a DC coat of paint. Lots of core mechanics were shaken up, and the result is a game that truly feels fresh, unique, and is simply a damn good time for all.
Whether you’re a tournament-level member of the fighting game community or simply want to see some of the most storied icons in entertainment beat each other up, it’s hard to go wrong with Injustice: Gods Among Us.
It was a hell of a month for punching, kicking, and brawling in general, and the decision for the game that did it best was closer than you’d think.
Guacamelee! is one of the best Metroidvania games that you’ll find outside of the two series that make up the term, infusing its satisfying exploration and combat with a great sense of humor. The music and visuals are also striking, culminating in a refreshing homage to the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Just great stuff all around.
We know we’re a bit late getting naming our winner for April, but we have a damn good reason: we’ll be giving away a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us to one lucky winner to celebrate our first Game of the Month! Just leave a comment below telling us why you want a copy of Injustice, and a winner will be chosen at random to receive the game on the platform or their choice — just be sure to comment with your correct email address so we can contact you if you win. However, we have to limit this giveaway to be US-only, because shipping is expensive.
Spread the word and have at it!
UPDATE: It would probably make sense to add a deadline, right? Make a comment by 1PM Central on May 14, 2013 (next week) and we’ll choose a winner then. Good luck!
