Game of the Month: April 2013 [Giveaway]

May 7, 2013 | By | 34 Comments

Injustice: Gods Among Us

It was a fairly light month for new game releases, but Injustice: Gods Among Us was the cream of the crop. It proved that a DC Comics fighting game could work if given enough creative freedom, with a dark story that was the most cinematic and engrossing that we’ve ever seen in a fighting game.

Most important is that NetherRealm Studios made sure that it wasn’t just Mortal Kombat with a DC coat of paint. Lots of core mechanics were shaken up, and the result is a game that truly feels fresh, unique, and is simply a damn good time for all.

Whether you’re a tournament-level member of the fighting game community or simply want to see some of the most storied icons in entertainment beat each other up, it’s hard to go wrong with Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Runner-Up: Guacamelee!

It was a hell of a month for punching, kicking, and brawling in general, and the decision for the game that did it best was closer than you’d think.

Guacamelee! is one of the best Metroidvania games that you’ll find outside of the two series that make up the term, infusing its satisfying exploration and combat with a great sense of humor. The music and visuals are also striking, culminating in a refreshing homage to the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos. Just great stuff all around.

We know we’re a bit late getting naming our winner for April, but we have a damn good reason: we’ll be giving away a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us to one lucky winner to celebrate our first Game of the Month! Just leave a comment below telling us why you want a copy of Injustice, and a winner will be chosen at random to receive the game on the platform or their choice — just be sure to comment with your correct email address so we can contact you if you win. However, we have to limit this giveaway to be US-only, because shipping is expensive.

Spread the word and have at it!

UPDATE: It would probably make sense to add a deadline, right? Make a comment by 1PM Central on May 14, 2013 (next week) and we’ll choose a winner then. Good luck!

    I can’t have enough Injustice!

  • hobbes21

The new Mortal Kombat was great and reinvigorated the genre for me. I believe NetherRealm delivered another high quality fighting game. It’s exciting to see the DC side of comics duke it out up close.

  • AnxietyGamer

Hell of a giveaway! Count me in!

  • MikeyWhoa

This game has reignited my interest in the fighting genre. Looking forward to punching Aquaman in the face.

  • whitefire

This is a great giveaway. You guys are doing an awesome job with this site!

  • BreAnna ‘Manning’ Wolfe

As a fan of Ed Boon and DC Comics since childhood I have been super stoked about the release of this game. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe was a good tease… but ‘this’ is what we have been waiting for since NetherRealm Studios & Warner Brothers got together.

  • d3vanj

Stoked to get this game. Been reading only good things about it.

  • Vanguard8

This is on my list of games I want to play badly, but knowing how notoriously short fighting games are in terms of story (yeah, I have more of an interest in the story than I do in the fighting) I’ve been holding off getting it until it drops in price or if I find it somewhere as a rental. I got the reboot of MK when it came out and was kind of put off by it, but this looks like it’ll be far more appealing.

  • Reneid Klein

I really enjoyed MK9 and was looking forward to this game but the initial roster looked kind of small so I didn’t pre-order it. Then, out of nowhere, they start announcing all kinds of DLC characters and I am left feeling kind of dumb for not getting it initially so I want to play it.

But my most important reason is to WHOOP JOE’S BUTT IN *YET ANOTHER* FIGHTING GAME but this time beating the brakes off of is Batman with the VASTLY SUPERIOR hero, Superman.

  • Danny

Mk9 was great, was nice to see that they didnt just rehash another mk game but actually took time in it

  • Jason Carroll

I really want this on Wii U. This game would be perfect for off TV/gamepad play.

  • Moussa Mohammed

Played the demo and really enjoyed it.
