The Daily Five: Games You Should Stop Waiting For

April 23, 2013 | By | 10 Comments

These days, it seems like most games publishers are way too excited about their projects. It’s not just that they spend reckless millions on trailers, advertisements, and promotional stunts and doodads. Where it really becomes a problem is when they announce a game way too soon.

Sometimes this culminates in games that simply don’t live up to years of hype, leaving everyone involved to be disappointed. Other times, games are seemingly announced right after they’re greenlit — remember in 2010 when THQ announced Guillermo Del Toro’s Insane for 2013?

That’s hardly the only case. Here are five more upcoming games that, frankly, we’re becoming less excited about with each passing day.

Prey 2

The original Prey was a surprisingly solid game from Human Head Studios and 3D Realms early in the Xbox 360’s life cycle. However, it had a tumultuous development cycle of nearly ten years.

Prey 2 was announced in 2011, and people were excited by the possibility of building on the original’s ideas. Yet it quickly fell into development hell, with rumors of its cancellation peppered through all of 2012. These rumors were at their strongest when Prey 2 was removed from the products page on Bethesda’s website in August.

Bethesda claimed that they would talk about the game when they were ready, but considering that no new images or videos have been released since 2011, things aren’t exactly looking up.

Beyond Good & Evil 2

Beyond Good & Evil has the dubious honor of being one of the most critically acclaimed commercial flops in the history of games. It was practically set up to fail by Ubisoft — they published it alongside Final Fantasy X-2 and The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

To everyone’s surprise, Beyond Good & Evil 2 was announced in 2008. Since then, we’ve seen nothing but the initial announcement teaser. Ubisoft then released the original game on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2011, seemingly to gauge interest in the series, but it sold under 100,000, well behind games like Full House Poker.

Creator Michel Ancel claims that development is well underway, with his studio at Ubisoft Montpellier taking a break to work on Rayman, but that we won’t be seeing BG&E2 until the next generation is in full swing. Something tells me that it’ll be even longer than that.

Agent

If you remember Agent, congratulations — you’re one of several people who do, including those at Rockstar Games. It was announced back at E3 2009 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, but we haven’t seen anything official on the proposed Cold War spy thriller with the exception of a logo.

Since the announcement, the only new information has come through unofficial channels in 2011. Namely, a former environment artist that was working on Agent posted a few screenshots for his online portfolio. At the PlayStation 4 reveal event this past February, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said that “I have some knowledge, but I’m not in a position to talk about it,” when asked about Agent’s status.

Just take a look at Agent’s official site; it’s still got the old PlayStation 3 logo on it. Don’t hold your breath.

I noticed you didn’t mention Versus this time. I told you it was still being developed. I just hope it is as good as the original trailers made it look.
