The Daily Five: Most Exciting PS4 Games for 2014
2013 was a banner year for game releases, with many of the greatest titles of this generation coming out within mere months of each other. Many of us are still coming to grips with the futility of of fighting against our growing backlogs, but guess what? Time doesn’t wait for us turkeys, uncaring for whether we beat Beyond: Two Souls or not.
Alright, maybe it’s too early in the year to be dropping metaphysical truth bombs at the top of a post, but with the first full year of the PlayStation 4 ahead of us we can’t help but look forward. There aren’t a lot of firm release dates out there just yet, but 2014 looks to be a great start to the PS4’s life cycle.
Have a look for at just a few the brightest games for yourself.
Infamous: Second Son
The PS4 reveal last year gave us a tantalizing glimpse at a few of its upcoming games, but there’s no question that the most promising among them was Sucker Punch’s Infamous: Second Son. The series has been impressive on PS3, but its next-gen debut is poised to push it over the edge into a huge mainstream success.
With control over more powers than ever before, players will be able to control smoke, neon, and other yet-to-be-disclosed powers. Not only does this open up all kinds of gameplay possibilities, it makes for one of the most visually impressive games to hit either new console.
Look for Infamous: Second Son to hit PS4s worldwide on March 21st, 2014.
While everyone has been having fun with their new PS4s and Xbox Ones since their launch in November, the absence of Watch Dogs has not gone unnoticed. Sure, everyone has had a great time with Assassin’s Creed IV, but Watch Dogs seemed to be the shiny new open-world sandbox befitting a new generation of consoles.
The good news is that it still is! The wait has been hard, but Ubisoft is promising that the time has been spent polishing a game that has yet to fail at impressing those who’ve seen it in action. A fictionalized Chicago ripe for the hacking awaits us in the first quarter of Ubi’s fiscal calendar, or the second quarter of a people calendar.
The Order: 1886
One of the most exciting parts of any new console launch is seeing what developers come up when they get to play with more horsepower, and one of the most compelling results is The Order: 1886 from Ready at Dawn and Sony Santa Monica.
The Order: 1886 is a third-person action shooter, set in a world where humans have been at war with “halfbreed” beasts for centuries. In this alternate history, technology has advanced at an almost alarming rate, giving players access to all manner of crazy weapons, as well as tools like thermal imaging and radio communication.
We’d still like to see more of it in action, but we’ll surely get a good look at The Order: 1886 as we approach its Fall 2014 release.
